Invitation to Make a Referral to the Admissions Department

November 6th, 2017

Dear Yale SOM Alumni,

Hello from the Yale School of Management!  As we head into the heart of the admissions season, I am writing to ask for your help in recruiting the Class of 2020.  Specifically, we are seeking referrals of strong MBA candidates to Yale SOM.

Bruce DelMonico
Assistant Dean for Admissions,
Yale School of Management

But first, I want to take a moment to thank the hundreds of alumni volunteers who assisted our admissions efforts this past year, whether by hosting or attending an event, reaching out to an admitted applicant, or in any number of other ways.  Your involvement truly makes a difference.  And the results this past year were impressive, including a 12% increase in applications and a median GMAT of 730 and GPA of 3.63 for the incoming class.  (You can see more of the class profile in the attached snapshot below.) There is a lot of positive momentum that we are looking to continue.  Getting your input on top MBA candidates is one way to do that.

Who should you refer?  As you think of early-career individuals with whom you interact, you may not know their GMAT score or GPA, but you likely know a few individuals who stand out in terms of their intelligence, judgment, diligence, and ability to influence others.  These are the people we want.  In particular, given the School’s mission to educate leaders for business and society, we are especially interested in individuals who are broad-minded and intellectually curious; who think creatively about situations; and who apply analytical rigor to solutions.  In short, we want individuals who are best able to leverage three distinguishing features of Yale SOM:

1.    The business school most integrated with its home University;
2.    The most global US business school; and
3.    The best source of elevated leaders for all sectors and regions

How can you refer candidates?  Referring candidates is easy.  Just go to this online form and fill out the requested information. I encourage you to refer as many high-potential individuals as you know. You can do so anytime, but if you submit a referral by December 1, 2017, they will receive a one-on-one consultation session with a member of the Admissions Committee before this year’s main application deadline on January 4, 2018.

What happens after you refer a candidate?  The candidate will receive an email letting them know that they have been referred to Yale SOM and inviting them to learn more about the School.  We will also keep them informed about events and activities in their area. In addition, as noted above, any candidate referred by December 1 will receive a one-on-one virtual (online or phone) consultation with a Yale SOM Admissions Officer.

How will we acknowledge your referral? In order to show our appreciation for your help in this important effort, every alumna/us who refers a candidate will be highlighted in the SOM annual report. In addition, if the candidate you refer ultimately applies and is admitted to SOM, you will be entered into a raffle for a weekend (airfare and 2 night’s hotel) to New Haven on the dates of your choice (e.g., Homecoming, Reunion, etc.). Finally, we will also let you know if any candidates you recommend are admitted to SOM so that you can congratulate them on their admission.

How else can you help?  As I mentioned above, many of you have helped us in many ways over the years. I’ve attached a list outlining additional ways to get involved with admissions, as well as a few guidelines for how to engage individuals who may be interested in SOM.

Thanks so much.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call or email me directly.  My direct line is (203) 432-5604.

Best regards,

Bruce DelMonico
